About Sunny

The light's on.

Sunny began as a passion project between a mother and son during their homeschool years.

What started with tinkering with radio equipment grew from a simple desire: to reach beyond our own walls and feel more connected to the community around us.

Homeschool life can be wonderfully flexible, creative, and full of possibility—but it can also be isolating. Between the demands of family life, work, learning, and everything else, finding and maintaining community isn't always easy. We began to imagine radio as a kind of local gathering place: somewhere you could turn on and hear familiar voices, discover something new, and feel a little more connected, even when you couldn't get out and meet up in person.

We wanted Sunny to feel like the local park—a shared place where people could come and go, meet neighbors, explore their interests, and gradually become part of something larger than themselves.

More than one way to connect

Radio remains part of Sunny's story, but Sunny is growing beyond any one format.

Today, we're making room for a wider collection of community-minded projects, creative experiments, practical services, and ideas still taking shape. That may include media and podcasts, technology help, youth projects, learning and making, local gatherings, and—someday—physical spaces where people can create, connect, and spend time together.

Some things may become businesses. Some may remain small experiments. Some may support other projects as they grow. We don't have every room finished yet.

That's okay.

Sunny isn't built around one product or one program. It's built around the idea that communities need more ways for people to find one another, share what they know, explore what interests them, and contribute something of their own.

What we believe

Connection matters.

Community doesn't only happen when everyone can be in the same place at the same time. Sometimes connection comes through a conversation, a shared project, a familiar voice, a useful resource, or simply knowing there is somewhere to turn.

All kinds of people belong here.

Sunny grew out of our homeschool experience and continues to have deep roots in that community, but our doors are open more widely. Young people, families, creators, makers, neighbors, and people with ideas are all welcome here.

People have something to contribute.

We don't believe community is made up only of organizations serving passive audiences. People can make things, share skills, solve problems, start projects, tell stories, and help build the places they want to see.

Learning happens everywhere.

Learning doesn't belong to one building, curriculum, or stage of life. We believe in curiosity, experimentation, creativity, and learning by doing.

We can build useful things together.

Not every idea has to begin fully formed. Sometimes you tinker with something. Sometimes you try a small experiment. Sometimes a conversation turns into a project. Sunny is a place to make room for that process.

Many rooms. One roof.

We think of Sunny as a growing community space with many rooms.

There may be a studio for media and stories. A workshop for making and experimenting. A help desk for solving practical technology problems. A common room for gathering and connecting. Other rooms are still under construction.

The important thing is not that every room looks the same.

The important thing is that there is room.

Where we're going

We don't know exactly what Sunny will look like several years from now. That's intentional.

We're building alongside our family's homeschool journey and following the projects, opportunities, and community needs that make sense along the way. We hope some of what grows here will support our own family, help create opportunities for our son and other young people, and strengthen the communities we are part of.

Our goal isn't to build the biggest organization or create a perfectly polished brand.

We want to keep the light on.

To create room for connection when life feels isolating. To give ideas somewhere to grow. To help people when we can. To make things. To learn things. To bring people together.

Sunny is still growing.
